The Lady In Pain

INTRODUCTION

I have started this project to help victims who have been sexually abused and who live trapped in hell.Vístela is the name of this artistic dress that I made during a dark period in my life. This dress is made out of artificial hair. Making this dress helped me to move on. All the feelings I had during this dramatic period of my life are hidden in Vístela, a cocktail of intense emotions. The most beautiful and painful emotions in one piece of art.Vístela carries my emotions, sadness, frustration, passionate love, loss of self-control.
That’s why I’ve decided to bring Vístela to life, to visualize the feelings that are hidden in Vístela to give an important message to the world.
I invite you all to read the sad story of my dress, to read the beautiful poetry, to watch the photo exposition and to watch the films.Due to this overwhelming mixture of emotions I discovered my talents for creativity, management and research. I have decided to start an investigation on my own, to help victims worldwide to get out of their pain/trauma. I have put together a plan with the most important information for parents on how to help their child correctly and quickly to prevent them from living trapped in pain for a lifetime. This plan consists of three parts: plan for parents, consequences of victims who suppress their trauma, as well as challenges with current therapies and what to do about this.I compiled this plan from a summary that I have put together with the most important information through listening to the experiences and stories of victims, through my own story and through my anonymous phone calls with different kinds of psychologists for advice. I have also observed a complete EMDR treatment and I have discovered what can go wrong, what the problem is and what to do about this.

MY STORY

Vístela is her name, the name of the dress made of hair. This gown of sadness I wear. She carries all the pain I experienced with someone I consider my soulmate. When I first looked into his eyes, I knew he was. I was lost, he was my guide. I was sad, he was my sunlight. The love we had for each other was the strongest emotion I ever felt in my life. We were both unhappily married, carrying both our backpacks of pain from the past. The romance was amazing, but didn’t stay that way for long. After a couple of months it was still there, yet gone. What used to be a 100% perfect love affair turned into a living hell. My soulmate romance transformed into an evil nightmare. He appeared to be carrying a trauma since childhood - he was stuck in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Because of this, our love became like the worst crime. I got trapped in his prison of pain from which I could not escape, because I loved him.He abused me psychologically, hurt me and made me cry every day. From his perspective hurting me was a sign of power and possession. He didn’t deserve me, nor our love - those were the words that constantly repeated in his mind. Our love was made impossible. To soften his burden he used drugs and materialism, but after he got clean he came to realize what he was doing to me and that he was sick and stuck.
I tried to help him, but his PTSD kept him locked in a cage. He made the decision to stay locked in his cage after living in it for the past 30 years. He couldn’t find an escape, because in his mind he did not deserve it. That’s how he set me free, because he loved me.
I can’t enjoy my freedom now living a life without him. The emptiness will never go away. The emptiness will stay for at least a thousand years. Dancing while wearing Vístela, I would still love him for a thousand years.-- Johana

TRAPPED
By Dub V © 2019

I fell into your booby trap
After my escape from domestic boredom
My husband was full of crap
I felt overruled and lonesome
That’s how I got trapped
Trapped into your cage
Without knowing your rage
I was lost, saw you as my guide
But you were just another twilight
Our love was so strong
Nothing could go wrong
Both unhappily married
Both pains of the past
But your pains were not buried
That’s how I got trapped
Trapped into your prison cell
You made my life another hell
With our lives turned upside down
True love and true hate hand in hand
I felt like a queen without a crown
You were a junkie and a materialist
I turned into your victim yet a realist
Realizing you were a sadistic freak
That’s how I was trapped
Trapped into your evil game
Post traumatic stress disorder
was your middle name
Suddenly you saw my pain
That was linked to your painful past
You didn’t want to live in vain
Realizing I played another victim in your cast
Tired of playing this drama
You decided to end our love
Once being a victim yourself
You let me fly away like a dove
That’s how you set me free
Free to live my life my way
Free to be me
To catch every sun ray
Peace is now my middle name

The Lady In Pain

Ruben & Yosine

Twee personen in één lichaam.“Dr.

Plan for Parents: How To Help Your Child Correctly

*Dutch version follows

A Plan for Parents of Children Who Have Been Sexually AbusedTo quickly and properly help a child who has been sexually abused, it is of course of the utmost importance that the child is well supervised by the parents. Below you'll find an explanation of the functioning of children after sexual abuse. What are the signs and symptoms of sexual abuse, how can you best deal with your child and which type of guidance will quickly lead to healing?BehaviourPain, anger and sadness can cause the child to become very irritable, have temper tantrums and display unruly behaviour. Sleeping problems, fears and a feeling of insecurity can also occur. The child is not able to function normally at this time, which is why it is very important not to force them to do anything and to offer as much support and rest as possible, even if you as a parent do not know what has caused the drastic changes in your child's behaviour.Behavioural problems can arise from all the emotions a child experiences, yet hides or suppresses. The nature and severity of the behavioural problems differ per child; it all depends on how severely damaged your child is and what he or she links the traumatic event to in everyday life. Abused children can start isolating themselves, shutting themselves off, have difficulty talking about the traumatic events, and carry their pain alone, day after day. This can result in unruly behaviour. Although the way in which behavioural problems manifest themselves can differ from child to child, there are some signs that could be an indication of sexual abuse. As a parent, you can recognize the following symptoms of sexual abuse:- Tantrums
- Panic attacks
- Eating disorders
- Taking extremely long showers
- Sleeping problems
- Fears (for example: feeling unsafe, being afraid of the dark, being afraid of going to sleep, fear of being alone, fear of abandonment)
- Self-loathing
- Depression
- Changed behaviour
In case of a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), children can subconsciously develop a daily routine to feel safe. They can start limiting themselves, stop wanting to participate in normal daily activities and no longer want to stick to the house rules. Children can retreat into a self-created world in order to feel safe and suppress trauma, pain and anger. This can manifest itself in different ways in different children. Allow your child to do this if it calms them down, until the therapy sessions have advanced and the trauma is largely resolved. The article Consequences For Victims Who Suppress Their Pain/Trauma offers an explanation of the self-created world in which sexual abuse victims can retreat to feel safe. What Parents Can Do To HelpIf your child shows the symptoms described above, make sure you give them peaceful surroundings, support, attention, and love, even if you don't know what's going on and your child doesn't want to talk. Contact a trauma therapist (psychologist) as soon as possible in order to get your child help in dealing with the pain and trauma. Also read the article Problems In Finding The Right Therapy, which describes what you as a parent should pay attention to when looking for good, adequate treatment for the trauma your child is struggling with.During this period, let your child stay at home (if at all possible) when he or she asks for it. Give him or her as much rest as possible during the treatment period.Do not argue with your child if they are irritable, have temper tantrums or display other aggressive behaviour when you ask them to do something. This out-of-control behaviour may stem from the fact that they are suppressing a variety of emotions. Be a patient parent, listen carefully to your child and take them seriously if they indicate an unwillingness or inability to do something. There is a reason why your child indicates that they do not want to do something or are unable to do it; it is therefore important not to force them into anything and to take all of their complaints seriously. That way, you can avoid the tantrums and keep things from getting too much out of hand at home.If your child does not want to eat normally and/or eats very little, you should not force them to eat. All the emotions, pain and anger the child is experiencing may make eating difficult. Many people who have experienced these traumas as a child say that parents should accept the fact that a damaged child during difficult periods sometimes eats less than they used to. As long as the child continues to eat - however small and sporadic the portions - it is important that you do not force them to eat, as this could lead to the development of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa.Victims are mourning what they have been through, which can make food taste bitter and difficult to swallow. Victims of sexual abuse who have subsequently developed an eating disorder give the following advice: "Parents should ensure that there is enough healthy food in the house, that it is somewhere in sight and that dinner is ready early. You can tell your child that he or she can grab the food whenever he or she wants to, and that it's important they at least take a few bites, but you shouldn't force it or get angry if the child is not eating enough or not eating in a normal way. Be grateful when the child does manage to take a few bites, and leave it at that." In many cases this is the way to ensure that your child continues eating and does not develop a compulsive eating disorder. When your child starts treatment, their behaviour and eating habits will gradually return to normal. Many adults who have been sexually abused as teenagers describe their experiences and emotions as follows:"It feels as if you've been cut in half. All throughout the day you have to wear a mask and try to pretend that nothing is wrong, while the pain is destroying you from the inside, rendering you powerless. In spite of the inner damage, you have to force yourself to act as normally as possible. You hide yourself to hide your uncontrolled crying, you feel terribly abused, you're full of self-loathing, and you're disgusted with yourself. It's nearly impossible to explain exactly how damaged you feel on the inside.""The emotional pain is so extreme that every cell of your body, every inch of skin hurts, and you feel paralyzed. It feels as if you're trapped in a dark cell where no one can see your pain, but no one can hear or understand what you're going through either. You feel cut off from life, are too ashamed to talk about your issues, and over the years, you learn how to keep suppressing and swallowing your pain. But suppressing the pain can make you extremely irritable. The uncontrollable emotions lead to anger issues and temper tantrums and a lot more."The article Problems In Finding The Right Therapy also takes a closer look at the consequences victims may experience from suppressing their trauma.

Consequences For Victims Who Suppress Their Pain/ Trauma

Most victims who are sexually abused do not dare to look for help because of their fear, humiliation, anger, sadness and especially their mistrust of others. They unknowingly do harm to themselves by not looking for help. They have to know that the consequences are huge. The biggest consequences can include unconsciously creating a rhythm of life in which they are trapped - a self-created world (bubble) in which they feel safe and their trauma is raised as little as possible. For many, however, this also feels like a prison. An example of this self-created world: they often choose a busy life in order to minimize contact with themselves. They unconsciously choose an atmosphere where no emotions are present - a superficial life - because when they get in touch with feelings or emotions (or themselves), the trauma comes back and they lose control. Everything that is linked to this trauma is avoided in their daily life routine; this can include not only words but also daily activities. As a result, victims tend to shut themselves off from a lot.Their emotions are extremely disturbed, so they create a communication disorder. Their daily energy goes on this way so that the trauma remains suppressed. Panic attacks and anger attacks regularly arise as a result. Because of this, victims often unknowingly harm themselves and others in their environment. The worst thing is that they don't see it themselves: they see that they live in pain, and that something is wrong with their behaviour, but they don’t know that these are the consequences of suppressing their trauma. My story is about someone who has been imprisoned in this for 30 years and thousands of people still live that way. This has to stop. I hope they read this article and that they take the step to look for help. Read what you have to do, to get out of this. Read my plan and follow my instructions.

The Lady In Pain

The Problem With Current Therapies & The Solution

*Dutch version follows

Problems In Finding The Right TherapyThere are so many types of therapy available currently, including many with a commercial streak, that it is difficult to make the right choice. There are many good psychologists and trauma therapists - and probably just as many bad ones. Some practitioners do not initially examine the patient thoroughly enough; a good examination really is the basis for good healing. This careless preparation sometimes also ensures that behavioural problems are not treated, or hardly treated at all. What you as a parent should pay attention to when choosing a therapist to treat your child, and what you yourself can do to help your child step out of their self-created safe world:- First of all, the child must feel comfortable with the therapist.
- Ensure the therapist takes the time to properly examine the child, to carefully identify the trauma point(s) in order to find out in which situations the child experiences the most fear and by which events the fears are triggered.
- Once the trauma point(s) have been successfully treated, write down all of your child's behavioural problems. Write down in which ways your child restricts themselves, which activities they avoid and how they withdraw into their self-created safe world. Give your notes to the therapist and also ask for treatment of these behavioural problems.
- The fears underlying these behavioural problems should be carefully investigated and treated until they are resolved.
- Set up a schedule with your child and their therapist for slowly rebuilding activities and situations that your child has been avoiding due to fear.
If these steps are followed, there is a good chance the child will heal quickly and will soon begin functioning normally again. Be a patient parent. While there are therapies that can treat traumas relatively quickly, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and others, treating the fears that form the basis of behavioural problems and rebuilding normal daily activities takes longer than the treatment of trauma. Fight for your child's healing and take this advice to heart.Adults With Unprocessed TraumaAdults who have been sexually abused as a child and have tried different therapies but are still suffering from pain and difficulties, have probably not found the right therapists or therapies. Still, healing is also possible for them.People dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder often withdraw into themselves, consciously or subconsciously. They limit themselves and live in a self-made bubble of (false) safety, which they use to suppress and minimize the trauma to the point where it seems to have disappeared. They do this in order to avoid the fears they have for certain activities, situations, and even for certain words associated with the traumatic event. There are often no emotions in their world of false safety, and they tend to pick partners who do not show a lot of emotions, while generally not realizing that they're causing themselves great harm in suppressing the trauma. The article Consequences For Victims Who Suppress Their Pain/Trauma takes a closer look at the damage that untreated trauma can cause. What you can do to promote your healing:- As previously mentioned, a practitioner should firstly conduct an in-depth examination of the patient. They should listen carefully to the patient's stories in order to find out what the main points of treatment are, which situations or events trigger fears and how fears manifest themselves.
- The traumas must be treated first.
- After successful treatment of the traumas, the fears behind the behavioural problems should be addressed, followed by a slow rebuilding of activities that the patient has been avoiding. In this way, patients can gradually escape the limitations of the safe world that they have created for themselves.
How to find out what your behavioural problems are and what your self-created safe world looks like:You may be so emotionally blocked, that you cannot see what your behavioural problems are and in which ways you have been limiting yourself, even though you might feel that something is not quite right. One of the techniques used by psychologists to make patients aware of their own behaviour is to have patients write down their daily routine for a few weeks in a row. This helps patients gain insight into their own behaviour, and the notes help the psychologist make a good analysis. Family members and life partners can also be interviewed about the patient's behavioural problems. Many trauma victims indicate that this can be an important part of healing.Behavioural problems may include:- Tantrums.
- Panic attacks.
- Fear of certain words associated with the traumatic event.
- Fear of standing up for oneself.
- Keeping oneself busy all the time and crossing one's own boundaries in order to keep the pain from resurfacing at quiet times.
- Self-punishment or self-harm, caused by the false belief that one doesn't deserve to be happy.
- Emotional blockages caused by suppressing emotion.
- Uncontrolled or chaotic functioning due to lack of control over emotions and behaviour.
- Avoidance coping/withdrawal into a lifestyle of false safety.
If you are also dealing with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, psychotherapy might be the best choice, according to many healed patients. Psychotherapy is a method of changing or renewing the patient's mind-set, allowing for a thorough cure. An example of psychotherapy is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); it is regarded as very effective by many cured patients. There are however, many other psychological therapies that can be very successful.Very important: if you are a drug or alcohol addict, your trauma cannot be treated, because therapies will have little effect so it will not be able to cure completely. First treat your addiction and when you heal from your addiction you can start to treat your trauma and heal completely.Fight for your healing. Therapists are only human; therefore, unfortunately, there are also bad therapists, and nowadays also many inadequate therapies. However, if you keep fighting, and if you follow the steps described above, you too stand a good chance of finding relief in the future.
